Think about it, when you were a child, every year, around December 24, the exact ceremony that is the famous writing of the letter addressed to Santa Claus took place. A moment of contemplation that you did not want to miss for anything in the world. Pen in hand, we begin to draw up a long list of gifts, making sure we have done a good job. Once the letter is finished, you send it to your parents, in an envelope labeled “Santa's House”. But deep down, you've always wondered, "Where does Santa Claus live? A mystery that our team of editors has tried to solve, heading to the Far North.

1 – At the North Pole

The North Pole is arguably the most popular place where Santa Claus lives. This is a mysterious and inaccessible place to ordinary mortals. This is where Santa Claus, his elves and his reindeer spend the majority of their time, even when they are not handing out presents.

A belief that dates back to the end of the 19th century. It is to the Americans that we owe these theories, and in particular to a certain Thomas Nast. An illustrator for Harper's Weekly, he drew Santa Claus for over thirty years, and he was Santa Claus in the form we know today. In an 1885 drawing, Thomas Nast indicates next to illustrations of Santa Claus the caption “Santa Clauss Town NP” and a description of his house “near the North Pole, in snow and ice”. This idea, often used, is still discussed today…

2 – In Finland

However, this answer to the question “where does Santa Claus live” is not unanimous. Finns claim their country is the official residence of Santa Claus. It's obvious: according to them, Santa's reindeer cannot graze at the North Pole.

In Finland, Christmas mythology is not far off. It features many symbols such as the Julbock (the Christmas goat) or the Nisse (or Tomte), magical creatures that distribute gifts at the winter solstice. The figures that were part of the holy figure of Saint Nicholas transformed into Santa Claus as we know him today. Santa Claus is a Finnish legend. The Finns claim that Santa's house is on the mountain Korvatunturi “the mountain of the ears” which is in Finnish Lapland. However, to ensure peace and quiet, Santa Claus decided to make his home in Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, in 1985.

Today, you can visit Santa Claus at Rovaniemi Santa Claus Village, where you can stay in Santa's post office, visit his house, or even take a sleigh ride with his reindeer.

3 – In Greenland

The Danes remain convinced that Greenland, a country that is part of and related to the Kingdom of Denmark, is where the beloved Santa Claus lives. It is a place both remote and central, ideal to reach any destination through the North Pole.

Julemanden Juulmanden, as he is called in Denmark (or Juulimaaq, in Greenland), is an inhabitant of Uummannaq, located in the bay of Spraglebugten, some 600 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. It is here, in a cozy chalet, that he would reside in a humble abode and would be accompanied by his faithful reindeer Rudolph. <br />The mailbox was once located in Nuuk, which was the capital of Greenland; the giant red mailbox is located in Ilulissat. Within its gates can be seen a variety of letters from children around the world, which Santa Claus makes a point of answering in person, even if he has to use Google Translate.

4 – Sweden

However, the race for the official residence of Santa Claus is fierce in Scandinavia. The Swedes, too, claim to be the home of Santa Claus. In Sweden, Santa Claus is known as Jultomten and lives in the country of Tomteland, which would be located near the Gesunda mountains, in the Dalarna region.

This is where Santaworld is located, an amusement park dedicated to the famous gift seller. An enchanting place that includes the troll kingdom and the house of the elves, as well as many other amazing places. You can also visit the reindeer enclosure, the gift-making workshop and Santa's house. In conclusion, despite the extensive research of our editors, it is still difficult to determine with precision the official residence of Santa Claus.
