Where does the advent calendar tradition come from?

The tradition of Advent calendar originated in Germany in the 19th century. “Advent” refers to the four-week period before Christmas, from December 1st to December 24th. The Advent Calendar was designed as a way for children (and sometimes adults) to count down the days until Christmas in a fun and exciting way.

The story of the Advent calendar is as follows:

Religious origins: The tradition of Advent is deeply rooted in the Christian religion and is intended to prepare believers for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas. It is based on the Church's liturgical calendar which begins on the Sunday closest to November 30.

The first creation: The first mention of an Advent calendar in the form of an Advent wreath dates back to the 19th century in Germany. The Advent wreath is a wreath of fir branches or other materials, decorated with candles. Each Sunday of Advent, a candle was lit to mark the progression toward Christmas.

The Creation of the Modern Advent Calendar: At the beginning of the 20th century, the first version of the modern Advent calendar was designed in Germany. It was a pious image printed on cardboard with 24 windows, one for each day of Advent. The children opened one window per day to discover a religious image or a biblical quote.

The Evolution of the Advent Calendar: Over time, the Advent calendar has evolved to include chocolates, small toys, candies or other surprises behind each window. It has become a fun way to count down the days until Christmas.

Global popularity: The Advent calendar tradition has spread around the world and become a popular custom during the holiday season, even outside of religious contexts. Advent calendars now come in a wide variety of styles and themes, from traditional religious Advent to calendars filled with chocolates, cosmetics, toys and other surprises.

THE Advent calendar has become a tradition eagerly awaited by children and adults, and it helps create an atmosphere of joy and anticipation during the Advent season, leading up to the celebration of Christmas.
